New systemic antifungal wide spectrum of action drug Lamisil is relating to allilamin compounds and available in tablets of 250 mg.
As a rule, Lamisil is used against onychomycosis (fungal infection of nails), scalp mycosis, fungal infections of the skin – treatment of dermatomycoses torso, legs, feet, as well as yeast infections of the skin caused by the genus Candida (e.g, Candida albicans) – in cases where the localization and severity or infection prevalence determine the feasibility of oral therapy.
Among systemic antifungal only Lamisil has fungicidal action in therapeutic concentrations against dermatophytes, molds and certain dimorphic fungi. Effect on yeast may be fungicidal or fungistatic depending on the type of fungus.
Fungicidal effect of Lamisil is carried out by enzyme inhibiting in the cell membrane at an early stage of the sterols biosynthesis in the cell of the fungus. This leads to a deficiency of ergosterol and intracellular accumulation of squalene, which causes cell death of the fungus.
The Lamisil drug has no effect on the metabolism of hormones or other drugs.
99% of Lamisil bound to plasma proteins and its inactive metabolites are excreted with the urine.
Recently, the scientists had accumulated materials on the successful Lamisil use in the treatment of trichomycosis of the scalp. When the patient suffers microsporia scalp, there are appointed Lamisil tablets. The dose is calculated from the weight of the child. Adult daily dose is 250 mg Lamisil. Duration of treatment is 4-6 weeks. If necessary, the duration of treatment may be prolonged.
Recommended length of Lamisil treatment: bones onychomycosis – for most patients 6 weeks, foot onychomycosis – 12 weeks (young patient with a normal rate of nail growth the treatment may be shortened and vice versa, with little nail growth Lamisil therapy is prescribed for more than 3 months).
Foot dermatomycosis is treated during 2-6 weeks, body, and legs dermatomycosis, skin candidiasis – 2-4 weeks, scalp mycosis – 4 weeks. Lamisil can be taken irrespective of food intake, since food intake has no significant influence on its absorbability and bioavailability.
Lamisile is well tolerated, non-toxic, does not enter into drug interactions with other drugs, so it can be used in children and sick elderly and senile, even in the presence of concomitant therapy, as well as in chronic compensated liver disease and kidney failure.
